Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that affects the heel and the bottom of the foot, causing pain and discomfort while running or walking.

While conservative treatment for your plantar fasciitis following a proper rehabilitation program should always be your first route, a walking boot may be the best route if all other treatment options fail. However, choosing the right walking boot can be a daunting task, with so many options available on the market.

This article will discuss the different types of walking boots for plantar fasciitis, including short and high walking boots and post-surgical walking boots, and help you understand the factors you need to consider when choosing.

I've got you covered and will help you find the best walking boot for plantar fasciitis.

Types of walking boots for plantar fasciitis

When treating plantar fasciitis, several different types of walking boots are available on the market. Each type has unique features, and it's important to understand them to make an informed decision about which type of boot is best for you. This section will look closely at the different types of walking boots for plantar fasciitis, including short, tall and post-surgical walking boots.

Short Walking Boots

These boots provide support and stability to the foot and ankle while keeping the design minimalistic and low profile. Also known as low-top walking boots, they typically reach just above the ankle, providing a good balance of support and freedom of movement.

One of the main advantages of short walking boots is that they allow for more ankle motion. This can be beneficial for those who move around a lot. In addition, it allows for a more natural gait, minimizing extra stress placed on the knees, hip, and low back.

Another advantage of short walking boots is that they are often more lightweight than tall ones. This makes it more tolerable to wear all day.

Short walking boots are best used for mild to moderate cases of plantar fasciitis, as they provide less support than tall walking boots.

It's important to note that short walking boots still provide good support and protection to the foot and ankle despite the name and provide the necessary support for those with plantar fasciitis.

Short walking boots are a good option for those looking for a balance of support and freedom of movement. They are lightweight and comfortable, making them a popular choice for treating plantar fasciitis.

Tall Walking Boots

These boots provide additional support and stability to the foot and ankle and protect the ankle from external forces. Also known as high-top walking boots, they typically reach up to the ankle or just below the calf, providing a high level of support and protection to the foot and ankle.

One of the main advantages of tall walking boots is that they provide a high level of support to the foot and ankle. This level of support can be beneficial for those with moderate to severe cases of plantar fasciitis, as well as for those who have suffered an ankle injury or have a history of ankle instability.

As I mentioned, tall walking boots provide additional protection to the ankle. Those who are more active throughout the day may benefit more from a tall walking boot as it will protect them from an ankle injury.

Regarding plantar fasciitis, tall walking boots are best used for moderate to severe cases, as they provide a high level of support and protection. They are also ideal for those who have suffered an ankle injury or have a history of ankle instability.

Post Surgical Walking Boots

I will include these here because they are a type of walking boot. However, post-surgical walking boots or Unna boots are medical boots used after foot or ankle surgery to provide support, protection, and immobilization to the affected area. They are designed to help the patient recover from surgery and prevent further injury.

Post-surgical walking boots provide a high level of support and protection to the foot and ankle while also allowing immobilization of the affected area to aid in the healing process. They are typically used after surgeries, foot and ankle fractures, ligament repairs, and other foot and ankle surgeries NOT for plantar fasciitis pain.

Factors to consider when choosing a walking boot for plantar fasciitis

Comfort is a crucial factor to consider when choosing a walking boot for plantar fasciitis. The last thing you want is to be in pain or uncomfortable while trying to alleviate your pain. In addition, a comfortable walking boot will make you more likely to wear it consistently, which is essential for healing.

Size of the Walking Boot

Proper fit is crucial when choosing a walking boot for plantar fasciitis, as an ill-fitting boot can lead to pain and discomfort. One of the best ways to ensure a proper fit is by using the size chart provided by the manufacturer.

Manufacturers often use small, medium, and large as general sizing options. However, it's important to note that different manufacturers may have different size measurements. This is why it's important to use the size chart provided by the manufacturer to match your shoe size, as this will ensure the most accurate fit.

The size chart provided by the manufacturer typically uses shoe size but sometimes includes measurements such as foot length, width, and ankle circumference. By measuring your foot and ankle and comparing the measurements to the size chart, you can determine the best size for your foot.

Pneumatic Technology

Some walking boots feature a "pneumatic" or "air cast" technology, including an air bladder that can be inflated using a built-in pump. The air conforms to the shape of your foot, providing customized support, protection, and compression to the foot and ankle. This enhances the overall fit and can be adjusted to your desired level of comfort, providing a more effective treatment option for plantar fasciitis.

Removable Inside Liner

A removable inside of a walking boot is desirable for several reasons.

First, a removable inside allows for easy cleaning and maintenance of the boot. This is important as the boot will be worn frequently and may come into contact with dirt, sweat, and other elements that can cause odor and bacteria buildup. By having a removable inside, you can easily remove, wash, and replace it, ensuring that the boot stays clean and hygienic.

Second, a removable inside allowed for customization and added comfort. For example, some walking boots come with a removable insole that can be replaced with a custom orthotic insert or a more comfortable insole.

Third, a removable inside allows for easy drying of the boot in case of getting wet.

Sole Design

A rocking sole is a vital feature in a walking boot, especially for those suffering from plantar fasciitis.

The rocking sole allows for a natural gait, which can help to reduce stress on the heel and the plantar fascia and protect your other joints, such as knees and hips, from injury. It also makes it more comfortable to move around in.

Additionally, a rocking sole can help improve balance and stability. The rocking sole allows for a smooth transition from heel to toe, which can help to reduce the risk of falls or further injury.

My choice of the best walking boot for plantar fasciitis

A pneumatic short walking boot is a great choice for those suffering from plantar fasciitis.

A pneumatic short walking boot provides enough protection for plantar fasciitis while not overprotecting. You will likely be in the walking boot for a couple of weeks. This will cause the foot and ankle to weaken. A short walking boot will cause less weakening of the ankle versus a tall walking boot.

In addition, a short walking boot allows a more natural gait than a tall walking boot. A walking boot will change your gait pattern. With a change in gait pattern, you will be putting stress on areas not used to receiving stress. I often see patients begin to develop pain in their knees, hips, or low back. A short walking boot will decrease these chances.

I recommend the United Ortho Short Air Cam Walker walking boot. It has pneumatic compression, a removable inside so you can keep it clean, a rocker bottom to allow for a more natural gait pattern, and it does not break the bank.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a walking boot can be an effective treatment option for those suffering from plantar fasciitis, especially for those with severe plantar fasciitis or who have not succeeded with other treatment options. However, it is important to remember that a walking boot should be used in conjunction with other treatment options, such as a proper rehabilitation program of strengthening and stretching exercises. This will help to alleviate pain and discomfort and speed up the healing process.

When choosing a walking boot, it is important to consider factors such as fit, support, comfort, and durability. A boot that fits, provides proper support and comfort, and is durable will be more effective in treating plantar fasciitis. It's also important to consider the removable inside, rocking sole, and the size chart provided by the manufacturer to ensure the most accurate fit.

By following these guidelines, you can ensure that you choose a walking boot that is right for you and that will provide the support and comfort you need to alleviate pain and discomfort caused by plantar fasciitis. Remember to consult a doctor or physical therapist before starting any treatment and follow the recommended plan for the best results.
